Description and background: Just what you have long awaited: helicopter tours of America’s wild, free horses are now available to the public! No more passing over bumpy, dusty or muddy roads, passengers will fly in a modern, secure, panoramic-view helicopter and be guided by a wildlife ecologist who has extensively observed, photographed, and written about these magnificent animals, and is intimately familiar with their habits and habitat, especially the areas being visited, since his childhood, or by his trained assistant.

Nevada Wild Horse Tours offers an affordable adventure of discovery that will reveal the keen aliveness and natural harmony of the horse returned to its age-old way of life. Set free and no longer at the beck-and-call of man, the survival instincts of horses quickly revive as they form their bands of several horses each, here in Nevada’s "basin and range" country. Each band establishes its daily and seasonal movements within a home range and evenly distributes its grazing pressure in the varied and fascinating terrain it perambulates. As a returned native species in North America, the horse has quickly refilled its vacant niche and complements many of its fellow native species in such ways as successful seed dispersal and germination and soil humus creation. A little considered fact is that these wild horses are also the perfect preventers of catastrophic fires, since their grazing of dry flammable vegetation occurs on a major and widespread scale, and their digestive system is well adapted to this coarser desert fare. To a large degree horses have made civilization possible during the past 6,000 years; and they have played a particularly important role in aiding both Amerindians and Whites in the history of the West. Now, their beautiful regaining of freedom and resumption of a natural lifestyle and interrelationship that has been millions of years in the making can be observed and photographed at a respectful but adequately close distance – and with an eagle’s perspective! Observing this great miracle of justice is the experience of a lifetime and should not be missed!

The itinerary: As the helicopter sets off, each tour will be given an overview and description of the mountains and valleys where the wild horses still survive, describing their natural and modern history and how the wild horses became established here and fit into life’s grande scheme. After one or more bands are spotted, the tour will zoom closer in to obtain a bird’s eye view, snap photos of the horses from a distance that will not disturb them but still be close enough to reveal amazing details. The guide will knowledgeably describe the horses’ present activities and how these fit in with their seasonal movement patterns aimed at survival. Through first hand viewing and revealing explanations, the tour participant will gain penetrating insights concerning the wild horses’ history, behavior and ecological relations and how they positively contribute to the natural and human life community here in Nevada as elsewhere in the West. After questions are entertained, the tour will safely return to the Carson City airport. The  helicopter is equipped with a transparent shell allowing nearly 360° of breathtaking viewing, and during warmer days this shell can be removed to obtain still clearer sightings. For parties of two, the small helicopter will be employed.  The helicopter comes with a transparent bubble floor for amazing views of the mustangs.

Also given or available: The wildlife ecologist’s autographed photo-illustrated book on wild horses will be given to each tour participant. Digital color photographs and film videos of the wild horses and the fascinating ecosystem they inhabit will be available on DVD.
